València
A l’octubre de l’any 2003 es va dur a terme l’estudi pilot per a la creació de la cohort INMA a València. Al febrer de 2004 va començar el reclutament de la cohort, que es va perllongar fins a juny de 2005. Es van reclutar 855 dones pertanyents als Departaments de salut 6 (34 municipis) i 7 (dos barris de València) de la província de València. Les embarassades es van seleccionar per mostreig consecutiu entre totes les de l’àrea d’estudi que van acudir al garbellat poblacional de la síndrome de Down que es realitza entre les setmanes 10 i 13 de gestació a l’hospital la Fe, que és l’hospital de referència de la zona, i que complien els criteris d’inclusió per a l’estudi: (1) Tenir almenys 16 anys; (2) Estar en les setmanes 10-13 de gestació; (3) Embaràs únic; (4) Intenció de continuar el seguiment i donar a llum en els centres de referència corresponents; (5) No tenir cap impediment per a la comunicació i (6) No patir cap malaltia crònica prèvia a l’embaràs.
Durant l’embaràs es va realitzar el seguiment a les setmanes 12 i 32. En aquests seguiments, es van obtenir mostres biològiques (sang, ungles i orina) i dades relacionades amb la dieta, la feina dels progenitors i l’exposició a contaminants.
Els nounats es van seguir al llarg de la infància. Es va fer una visita a l’any de vida en la qual s’avaluava el desenvolupament neurològic, l’antropometria, la salut respiratòria, l’alimentació i les exposicions ambientals. A més, es van mesurar els nivells de contaminants atmosfèrics a les llars (dins i fora) de la meitat dels xiquets; per fer-ho, es van instal·lar dosímetres durant 15 dies. Als 2 anys se’ls va fer una entrevista telefònica i als 4 anys se’ls va citar altra vegada a l’Hospital la Fe per avaluar els hàbits dietètics, el creixement i poder obtenir mostres biològiques (orina, cabell i sang) per mesurar nutrients i exposició a contaminants ambientals.
