Gipuzkoa
En mayo 2006 se pone en marcha en Gipuzkoa el proyecto “Infancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA)” con objeto de evaluar el papel de los contaminantes ambientales presentes en el aire, agua y dieta en el crecimiento y desarrollo de los niños. La incorporación de las mujeres a la cohorte se realiza coincidiendo con la primera ecografía de control de embarazo. Se recogen muestras biológicas (sangre, orina, pelo, placenta, etc.) y se cumplimentan una serie de cuestionarios (general, dieta, laboral, ambiental, etc.) realizándose la valoración de los contaminantes presentes en el aire ambiente y en el agua de consumo, así como una estimación de los contaminantes aportados por la dieta.
El ámbito geográfico del estudio viene definido por la población de referencia del Hospital de Zumarraga que incluye los municipios del Goierri y del Alto y Medio Urola. Este entorno fue seleccionado por las características de los servicios del hospital y atención primaria implicados, así como por las características ambientales: fuerte presencia de industria siderometalurgica, alta densidad de tráfico, bajos niveles de productos derivados de la desinfección en el agua de consumo y dieta rica en pescado, unidas a cierto grado de hipotiroidismo en las mujeres embarazadas.
Desde entonces se ha realizado el seguimiento de 640 mujeres en el primer y tercer trimestre de embarazo. Actualmente se está realizando el seguimiento de 623 niños en aspectos de crecimiento y desarrollo neuroconductal.
