Evalute the effects of iodine supplementation on maternal thyroid function. This is the headline of the article prepared by the SINC platform on the study prepared by Marisa Rebagliato, first author of the study, researcher and project coordinator INMA cohort in Valencia. As well explained in the news, research was published in the latest issue of the journal 'Epidemiology', and it evaluates the intake of iodine in food, iodized salt and vitamin supplements, as well as urinary iodine excretion (iodine content in the urine) in 1844 pregnant women in the provinces of Guipuzcoa, Valencia, Sabadell, in the period from 2004 to 2008. The objective of this investigation was analyze the relationship between nutritional status of iodine and thyroid function during the first half of pregnancy.

Article developed by the SINC begins with a Marisa Rebagliato words: "An adequate iodine nutritional status prior to commencement of and during pregnancy is essential to maintain adequate maternal thyroid function and promote brain maturation of the fetus and pscimotor development of the child ". For this reason remarque the need to promote the universal consumption of iodized salt for secure adequate iodine nutrition well before pregnancy.
