New INMA result of Project

Iodine is an essential element for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. A team of researchers from the Children and Environment Project (INMA) has studied the consequences of their intake through diet and supplements in pregnant women. With these first three lines are echoed in the Plataforma SINC website of the study by Marisa Rebagliato.
The review conducted in the Plataforma SINC turn highlight the publication of this study in the magazine 'Epidemiology', and this broadcast is a top INMA Project, to publicize the field work and results of their studies and research.

1844 women tested
As outlined in the Platform SINC, research assessing the food intake of iodine, iodized salt and vitamin supplements, as well as urinary iodine excretion (iodine content in urine) in 1844 pregnant women in the provinces of Guipuzcoa, Valencia, Sabadell, in the period between 2004 and 2008.
The aim was to analyze the relationship between nutritional status of iodine and thyroid function during the first half of pregnancy. In this regard, Marisa Rebagliato concluded with the following mission statement: "there should be an epidemiological surveillance of nutritional status of iodine in the population before making a recommendation to take systematic iodine supplementation during pregnancy. And above all, promote consumption universal salt iodization to ensure adequate iodine nutrition well before pregnancy".
